Background

The Swan Hill Region Tourism & Hospitality Committee held the inaugural Swan Hill Region Food & Wine Festival weekend in March 2011. The event aimed to celebrate and enhance the food and wine excellence in the Swan Hill Region, the heart of the Australia s food bowl.

The event was met with great enthusiasm from locals, visitors and the tourism industry about our region, our local products and our ability to put on such an event.

The festival was again run in 2012 and despite weather challenges, was again a great success.

Building on the success of 2012

There were 600 visitors to the festival in 2012 which included visitors mainly from Swan Hill and surrounding areas as well as Melbourne and representation from QLD, NSW, ACT, SA and WA.

The venue and program was excitedly received by our supporting partners and the public in general and all events were well attended. The PS Pyap Cruise and Signature Dinners were a sell out.

Following the overwhelming positive response to the festival and the remarkable feedback we continue to receive, the committee is determined to see this festival continue and gather momentum. Given the opportunity over the coming years we believe this event could change the food and wine profile of the Swan Hill region as a tourist destination.

Our aim as a committee is to grow and develop this event into a Hallmark event on the Swan Hill regions calendar.

Here are some activities happening over the weekend…

Friday 25 November

• Jump on board a Pyap cruise, departing at 5pm and 7pm at the Pioneer Settlement
• Late night shopping until 7pm
• “Musos Stuff” FREE student musician concert at Riverside Park from 7.30pm
• The Sound and Light Show 9pm at the Pioneer Settlement book on (03) 5036 2410

Saturday 26 November

• Swan Hill Region Produce & Design Market from 1pm - 7pm, near the Art Gallery
• Go Shopping with extended CBD trading hours until 4pm and the Swan Hill Regional Art Gallery open until 8pm
• Ride on the Pyap Paddlesteamer at 6pm
• Swan Hill Inc Retail Competition, drawn at 3pm at the Campbell Street Kiosk. Pancakes at the Kiosk from 10am—4pm
• Blue Light Disco, 6.30pm - 9.30pm Swan Hill Outdoor Swimming Pool (Ages 10 – 16)
• Twilight Cinema at Swan Hill Riverside Park screening Breaking Dawn, Part One from the Twilight series. Gates open at
• 7pm- Entry $10.00 per person. Catering by community groups and a bar facility will be available at the park.

• Pioneer Settlement. Whether you go general admission, or take a picturesque cruise on the paddle steamer,
• transported back in time on the Sound and Light tour or … wander around at your own pace.. The Pioneer Settlement is a
• must see ideally located along the little Murray River.
• Riverside Walk… follow the track!
• You must go and see our iconic Murray Cod (Big Fish) near the train station make sure you get a photo!
• Moreton Bay Fig (or Burke and Wills tree) on Curlewis Street
• Take your pick between the indoor or outdoor pool
• Wine and dine in the heart of the Murray at one of our many restaurants and cafes.
• Murray Downs Golf and Country Club, 5km over the bridge into NSW

The Swan Hill region’s wines have come along way in the last decade or so, with many award winning vintages finding their way into people’s hearts. New wineries have opened and new grape varieties have been planted offering a robust and interesting range of local wines for visitors to discover.

What’s more, a distinctive regional style has developed inspired by the long hot summers and rich soils. Weave your way through the region to find major and boutique wineries, many with cellar doors that also offer wood-fired pizzas, al fresco lunches or riverside picnics.

Swan Hill Region has several walking trails to explore, with two of these within the City of Swan Hill itself, these being the 4.5 kilometre (one way) river walk, meandering along the tranquil parklands alongside the Murray River. The walk can be started anywhere along its length. There is interpretative signage along the way.

Swan Hill: “Now and Then” is the historical walk wandering through the modern streetscapes of Swan Hill, highlighting several buildings still standing as well as describing those lost to progress.

The Nyah Vinifera State Forest also offers bushwalking trails along the Murray River as well as within the forest itself.
